The show goes on a schools and community centres tour across Midlands and London regions.
My Grandad & I ….. is a devised theatre in education exploring identity, faith symbolism and issues of ethnicity. The story illustrates the historical discrimination against the ‘dastaar’ (turban) as worn by Sikhs when they first migrated to the UK during the 1950’s and 60’s, and the various protests that prompted a campaign to change the law. Discriminating against the wearing of the turban was not liable to legal prosecution before 1983, despite the Race Relation Act of 1976.
The character of Grandad encapsulates various historical figures who were at the forefront of campaigns for the acceptance of the dastaar, such as Sohan Singh Jolly, Tarsem Singh Sandhu, Sewa Singh Mandla and many many more.
