Videsh:recurring: / SHAMMI AULAKH

SUBZERO
ARTIST STATEMENT

I first encountered the character of Fauji back in 2004 and made Videsh a year later.  Videsh meaning ‘foreign land’  is an aspiration for most poor young men in India to go abroad and earn upkeep for their families.  They have substantial demands to send money back ‘home’ in addition to paying the debt to ‘Agents’ for bringing them here.  I encountered Fauji again for the Agent/subzero project but have been meeting many ‘Faujis over the years – hanging around Gurudwaras for langar and in parks, bushes, wasteland, etc.   I meet him again in this film, from different platforms and viewpoints, but he and his story remain the same.
